Why Breathing Workouts Are the Best

Hi Chea,

If you live in California (or Hawaii or some other coastal place that's big into surfing) you've seen amazing surfers. And if you're like me you think they're crazy fit.

Whenever I see extreme sports athletes, it always makes me wonder what kind of workouts they do (besides their actual sport).

Is there some kind of secret as to how they build up the stamina and focus to being in the zone so much of the time? I wonder.

So when I got the opportunity to meet up with legendary surfer and entrepreneur Laird Hamilton last week in Malibu, I was excited to see what kind of workout we'd do together.

I was expecting some kind of crazy pool workout. I brought my swim shorts and was ready to go!

Instead, I showed up at his house and he took me out to his pool deck where about 10 other super fit guys were. And then we laid down and he led us through a breathing workout.

Yes, just breathing. But this was no ordinary meditation breathing routine.

It was one of the most challenging workouts of my life. I was sweating within minutes and thought I was going to pass out.

I stuck it out though and had an incredible experience with getting super focused. Laird was amazing about guiding us each from where we were at and helping us expand our breathing capacity.

By the end I held my breath for almost 4 minutes. I KNOW.

Needless to say, I'm a believer in the power of breathing after this experience.

Then I got to interview Laird about the power of breathing in his own athletic journey and lifestyle.

Laird, me, and his wife Gabby Reece (I'm finally not the only super tall one)

Not only does Laird have tons of crazy stories about nearly dying while pursuing his passion of water sports, but he has developed incredible discipline in his mind and body so that he can almost immediately get into flow.

Since I'm obsessed with learning how to do this myself, I asked him a lot of questions about how he does it.

I particularly wanted to know what turned him onto the power of breathing workouts in the first place (yes, there is someone who is more extreme than him who he is learning from).

I was surprised by the reasons growing up a minority in Hawaii really influenced his drive and passion to succeed.

And of course I asked him about his keys to relationship success (an amazing wife who he is in business with and his daughters).

Try a breathing workout and let me know if you like it!
