Quiz time: Growing up, how many hours did you spend watching TRL, MTV, and whatever else was on and dream of being on that screen?
I spent a lot of time watching sports, so it was a little different, but if you had told me that one day I'd rather be watched on a tiny phone screen on a channel that wasn't run by TV executives, I wouldn't have believed you.
Obviously a few things have changed.
It's pretty clear that traditional media is no longer king when it comes to getting fans and exposure.
That being said, I was fascinated by a conversation I had this week with one of YouTube's biggest filmmakers Casey Neistat.
Of course Casey brought his GoPro with him and vlogged during our interview
He has over a million followers on YouTube alone (not to mention huge followings on several social media platforms) and he's gained almost half of them in just the past couple of months.
If you haven't heard his name before, it's not because he's never worked with big brands. In fact, he's had a show on HBO, showed 2 films at Cannes Film Festival, and created wildly popular videos for brands like Nike, J. Crew, etc.
When I asked Casey if he would take a TV show deal again if offered one, he said, "Not a chance."
What?
He broke it down for me. He gets about 700K - 1 million views a day on YouTube. His followers increase by about 100K per week. And right now he's just putting up one vlog a day (that he shoots and edits himself on his phone and GoPro). There's no way he would get those numbers from a TV show.
Casey is a genius when it comes to film editing, storytelling, and understanding how to leverage new media to create amazing videos and loyal fans.
He is sought out by huge brands, university creativity labs, and fellow filmmakers.
But what he is focusing most of his attention on right now will surprise you.
Watch our full interview (and some of Casey's top-of-the-charts videos) on Episode 222 Casey Neistat on Writing Your Own Rules to Creative Success.
There's no way you won't be inspired after listening to what he has to say and watching his work.
Get creative today - it pays off!
