| Let me ask you a question... Do you like advertising? I don't like advertising (unless it's very clever or emotionally powerful, or features kittens or puppies...but I digress). Much of the internet is powered by advertising income, and while targeting is getting better so we're seeing ads that should match our desires, I feel it's still way more intrusive and annoying than interesting or helpful. The Day I Killed All My Advertising Income When I started online one of the very first income sources I tapped into was banner ads on my website. Naturally when I started blogging, ads were the first income source I turned to. That all changed in 2012. While the money was wonderful, I was tired of pushing ads into the face of my audience. I decided to cut all the ads from my blog, and instead focus on my own products and services. This was a big change to my blog, however there was one thing I did not have to change... My podcast. Over the ten years I've run the EJ Podcast I've never taken a sponsor or advertiser. You might be wondering then, how do I make money from my podcast? How I Make Money From Podcasting Over the years I've watched many new podcasters rise to fame and almost all of them focus on advertising sponsors as a way to make money. You're probably well aware of this yourself, since I suspect the podcasts you listen to start with a "brought to you by..." message, end with the same message and may even feature a mid-podcast "sponsor break" too. I never liked this strategy for two reasons:
Most podcasters are never going to get the required amount of mass podcast exposure to make good money from ads (it's the same story for bloggers). This is why, as I teach with my blog coaching, I recommend podcasters focus on a different monetization strategy. Your job as a podcaster is to foster a small but highly targeted listener base, specifically targeted at people who are right for the products and services you sell. To put it simply, your podcast should attract people who want to buy your stuff. Podcasting As A Marketing Strategy Here's the secret to make podcasting profitable... Be specific. Be strategic. Think about the products and services you sell and then think what kind of content you need to release on your podcast to attract the kind of audience who need the products and services you sell. This should make sense to you. It's surprising how many people create a podcast about a "general" topic, and invite a range of "general" guests for interviews without any thought about the strategy. Simply deciding to interview experts in your niche is NOT a strategy. That's a recipe for yet another copy-cat podcast that won't take off because it has no point of difference, no strategy. If you dig into the last few years of my podcast you might notice a trend. I re-jigged my strategy to follow my advice. I started interviewing people who were bloggers and/or sell information products. This was strategic because I wanted to showcase people who do what I teach. This works brilliantly well because it demonstrates that the system I teach works for other people (they make money in all kinds of niches using blogs and selling info products) AND it attracts an audience who are interested in doing the same. That's specific, targeted and strategic...and leads to sales of my products and services! The Most Common Feedback I Get... I receive a recurring comment from people who purchase my training programs. They tell me they listened to my podcast and they want to be my next success story case study. They want to BE like the people I interview on my podcast, and they purchase my product to help them get there. Think about that for a second. There's no reason why you can't do the same with your podcast. Stop thinking about low leverage income methods like advertising that require huge amounts of traffic. Stop blindly copying other podcasters. Instead be strategic and think about the business you are building and how a podcast can help you sell products and services. You won't need nearly as much traffic and you can make much more money. How? Because when you sell a $100, or $500 or even $1,000 product thanks to your podcast that's a much bigger return on investment. You don't need huge podcast download numbers. What you need are the right listeners with a predisposition for what you sell.
