Avoid keyword cannibalization

Hey There,

Are you still creating a crap ton of pages to target every single keyword you want to rank for?

What if I told you there's a chance (and a pretty good one) that you're actually competing with yourself, and doing more harm than good?


Enter keyword cannibalization.


Keyword cannibalization happens when multiple pages on a site are targeting the same term -OR- (and this is the point of this email) multiple pages on the site are targeting terms that Google scores as being very similar.

This is a problem because if Google is unable to score one page as more relevant than another, both pages will receive a lower score.

With Latent Semantic Indexing playing an increasingly important role in SEO (stay tuned, new post coming on LSI soon), it's extremely important to build out topical relevancy for your SEO-focused pages - but you need to avoid creating unique pages for keywords that are too contextually similar.

Here's a really simple process to see if you should build out unique pages OR if you should expand on the keywords and related topics on the same page*.

How To Check For SERP Overlap

  1. Download LinkClump for Google Chrome (100% free. I have no affiliation with this tool)
  2. Go to Chrome > Settings > Extensions > LinkClump > Options
  3. Change the Action to "copied to clipboard" and the "copy format" to URL's only


4. Open a new Google Sheet
5. Query Google for each of your root keywords
6. Use LinkClump to select each page of search results then paste them each into a new sheet in your Google Spreadsheet

This will give you a quick gauge as to Google's level of synonymity for the various keywords you're targeting. If the same URL ranks across more than 50% of the SERP's you're checking - then you shouldn't be creating unique URL's to target the terms, but instead, one bigfoot page.

If you want to save some time, here's a crude version of this in Google Sheets you can grab.

Once you're in the sheet MAKE SURE to click File > Make a copy.
