"I'd like to hand in my resignation..." I remember the day very clearly when I quit the last job I ever had. I worked at the University of Queensland in Brisbane Australia. I actually had two jobs, one at a library helpdesk, and another doing updates to the business school website. They weren't bad jobs, but my goal was always to experience true self-sufficiency, which meant I had to make enough money to support myself without needing a job. I read books like Rich Dad Poor Dad, so I knew that in order to become financially independent I needed to create ASSETS that generated income for me when I wasn't working. At the time the most obvious asset I could create was a website. I figured if one of my website projects could become a real online business, I would have the income I wanted. I also read books like the E-Myth, which taught how to structure a business to run without you. I felt like all the pieces of the puzzle were coming together in my head, but I had yet to turn my dreams of true financial independence into reality. My Failure Learning Curve Most of my early website projects failed to make money. I did make some money, for example I built a simple website for a local school using my basic HTML skills and earned $500 (woohoo!). After a few years though, it became clear to me that I was basically wasting my time. I knew what was wrong... I was making poor decisions. I built websites that could never make money, or I did work as a freelancer, which was basically just as bad (or sometimes worse) than having a job. I had to make smarter choices about how I spent my time and what I created. It was at that point I made a commitment to focus on something that could become a real asset. Something that provided a genuine service people needed. I already had the project up and running - my essay editing website BetterEdit.com - I just had never made the decision to go all-in. Now things would be different. I'd devote all my time outside of my part time jobs to make this business into an income producing asset that eventually would operate without me. A Dream Turned Into Reality If you've been following along with my introductory training series about the 'Services Arbitrage' business model, you already know what happened next with my editing business. It became my first full-time income stream, and it was because of this business that I went in to see my two bosses at the University and told them I was quitting my jobs. It was an amazing feeling, to know that the website I built to sell essay editing services was making enough money that I didn't need to work. That experienced happened many years ago. I suspect in your case, you are still working towards the day you hand in your resignation because your business is a full-time income source. Now It's Your Turn I want 2017 to be the year you finally create a Laptop Lifestyle income stream too. I want this year to be the year you get focussed and commit to one project that will become an income-producing asset. To make that happen, you have to Stop Dreaming and Start Doing. You must be so sick of the daily grind, working a job you don't like only to earn enough money to just get by. If what you did last year didn't break you free, then doing the same thing this year is not going to work either. Nothing will change if your ACTIONS don't change. If all you do is spend your few spare hours consuming information about other people's success, you're not going to become one of those rare success stories yourself. Reading emails, watching videos, listening to podcasts and browsing facebook is not going to get you there. You must CREATE if you want to break free. Stop Dreaming and Start Doing. Money flows to people who create value in the lives of others. That's the fatal-flaw all dreamers must face one day... You can't dream yourself to success. At some point things get real and you have to go out into the world and put something into the hands of other human beings. Whether that is by sharing your ideas, your services or your physical goods -- something you build must translate into value for others before you can ever hope to make money. I spent a lot of time stumbling around when I was getting started as an entrepreneur. However, I did one thing right in every project I ever worked on -- I ALWAYS focused on creating something for other people. I was an action taker. I was a creator. I am still an action taker. I am still a creator. I'm writing this email inviting you to become an action taker too, someone with a clear focus on one project you are going to turn into a stable, income-producing asset by the end of the year, This is the year where you relentlessly create more value for other people than you ever have before.
