1. Fasting social media
One of the things I have personally struggled with is falling into the comparison trap that comes from social media.
Social media is a big part of how we generate traffic to our site, and I don't really have the option of getting rid of my phone and laptop and moving to a ranch in Montana (which I secretly crave sometimes).
For me, there is a tendency to get on Instagram/Facebook/Twitter and incorrectly see how perfect everyone else's lives are and how I am missing out on so much.
I know it isn't true, but it has been a struggle nonetheless.
The 2 things that have helped me the most are:
1. Meditating on the truth that I am "fearfully and wonderfully made" and that God is the true source of all my joy and satisfaction in life.
2. Fasting it ( i.e. stop looking at it!). I find that a social media feed is a little like a car wreck, where I really don't want to look, but have a hard time NOT looking.
So just deleting the apps off my phone (for long periods of time) has been the thing that works the best for me. I sometimes feel like I am missing out on what is going on, but the increase in peace from eliminating that distraction in my life makes it so worth it.
I know a lot of people don't need this, but hopefully this helps someone out there.
2. How to make a Cast iron skillet virtually non-stick
I love cooking with cast-iron. I avoid teflon when at all possible due to the health risks of using it, but being the chef in our house I really miss the convenience of a non-stick pan.
I have used the traditional methods for seasoning cast iron for years and they work so-so in my opinion.
But I recently found this hack that has me thrilled about using my cast iron skillet again. It takes a little time and effort, but I have been VERY happy with the results.
3. Saving money on grassfed beef
Depending on where you live, it can be difficult to find grassfed beef - and often times if you do, it isn't fresh and/or it costs an arm and a leg.
For the last 3 months I have been testing out this service called Butcherbox which delivers grassfed beef, organic chicken, and pork directly to your door - and the kicker for me is that it is cheaper than if I buy it locally at the store!
Each month I get a big box (insulated with dry ice) delivered and even in the summer the meat somehow stays frozen.
So far, I have been very impressed.
Save time, save money
Whenever I can free up time (by not having to think about buying meat) and save money in the process it is a no-brainer for me.
Not sure how their prices compare to grassfed and organic meats in your area, but it is definitely worth checking into .
4. Watching the solar eclipse?
Thankfully for me Nashville is one of the best cities to be in for the upcoming solar eclipse (on the 21st) and since you can't look directly at the sun, eclipse or not, I decided to get some solar eclipse sunglasses for my family to see it.
Well it turns out that they are very hard to find them on Amazon with 100% certainty that they will arrive on time.
My solution?
Buy this 4-pack of kids glasses on Amazon and get them in 2 days. Sure, I will look silly, but they will only be worn for a few minutes anyway. ;)
So if you are having a hard time finding them and want to wear kids glasses like me, you should get a pair.
It's what all the cool kids are doing! ;)
What about you? Got anything interesting to share?
Hit reply and let me know!
Happy Thursday!
Bob
