The Three Things An Entrepreneur Needs

Dear Entrepreneur,

There are no cheat codes in entrepreneurship. None. You can't just buy the perfect marketing. You can't just meet the right people. You can't just find the right partner. You can't just hire a celebrity. That stuff could give you a little boost, sure. It's valuable. But it won't ease your path. It won't let you circumvent the difficult stuff. The only things that truly matter in entrepreneurship are great ideas, infinite flexibility, and hard work. That's it. We either sign up for that, or we quit right now. Because without those three, we don't stand a chance.

I was reminded of this recently when I flew out to Los Angeles to spend the day with Foodstirs, a hot new baking company. The actor Sarah Michelle Gellar is a cofounder (and she's on our cover this month)—but instead of hearing about how many doors she opens for the company, I heard about the many complications her presence creates. Investors and retailers are skeptical of celebrities! Many people don't take her seriously as an entrepreneur! So you know what the Foodstirs team did? They focused on what matters: Great ideas, infinite flexibility, and hard work. It didn't matter that Gellar the actor was on their team. It mattered that Gellar the hard worker was on their team.

Don't have access to a celebrity like Gellar? Don't worry about it. Honestly. I'd tell you what matters more, but by this point, I think you know what I'll say. There are no cheat codes, so let's get to work.
