How to be a leader

March 2020
Dear Entrepreneur,

How do you lead? There are entire industries devoted to answering this question. You could read books on it. Watch talks. Meet with coaches. Attend weekend retreats. Maybe you have; maybe you should! But here's something simple and beautiful about leadership, which is the reason why our new cover screams the phrase "HOW TO BE A LEADER": Leadership, above all else, is about giving people something they need.

That was my big takeaway after reading our profile on Tracee Ellis Ross, who transformed herself from an actor to a cultural force to a founder and CEO. The pivotal point: She started speaking up about issues that her audience care about—becoming a voice they could rally around. She made an emotional connection with people. She gave them a feeling of being heard, and of being amplified. There is nothing more powerful—and we all can do it, as individuals or with the brands we build. When we create something that people need, and we stand for something that people believe in, they don't just "follow" us. They join us. Voice, vision, and authenticity. That's leadership. Now let's go lead.
